Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Canadian Arctic Marine Security

Dr. Adam Lajeunesse holds the Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Arctic Marine Security.  Dr. Lajeunesse is also the author of Lock, Stock and Icebergs – a history of Canada’s Arctic maritime sovereignty, which examines the evolution of Canada's northern maritime sovereignty and the interplay between American security concerns and Canadian sovereignty requirements. His current and proposed work as Irving Shipbuilding Chair will focus on Whole-of-Government operations in the Far North, Arctic security, and northern history.  

Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Arctic Policy

Dr. Peter Kikkert is the inaugural Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Policy. Dr. Kikkert’s research focuses on safety, security, sovereignty, and governance issues in the polar regions. He has published on the evolution of international law in the Arctic and Antarctic, the Canadian-American defence relationship in the North, the possibilities and challenges of Arctic transportation, and histories of rural and isolated communities. He has also written extensively on the historic and contemporary role of the Canadian Armed Forces in the North and leadership within the Canadian Rangers. His current research program explores how to strengthen Search and Rescue (SAR) and emergency response capabilities, and to bolster community resilience in the Canadian Arctic.
