Research

Carl Adams' primary field of research is in magnetic materials. He has been using neutron scattering at reactor and spallation sources since 1993. During his recent sabbatical at McMaster University he was involved in a collaboration with Bruce Gaulin and his group on frustrated magnetic materials. His lab at StFX features a cyrogen-free 9 Tesla superconducting magnet, a closed-cycle helium refrigerator, and a liquid helium cryostat capable of reaching temperatures as low as 1.6 K. His in-house measurements involve electrical resistance over a range of temperatures and magnetic fields to identify phase transitions. He has also been working with Michael Steinitz to develop a new capacitance dilatometer that is compatible with the magnet and the new low-temperature equipment.
