The Alumni Aquatic Centre is a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool, located in the Amelia Saputo Centre at StFX. The facility is open to both the StFX and Antigonish community members. We offer a variety of Membership & Drop-In options to meet your aquatic needs.

Public Swims
Open Swim
A leisure swim for all persons
Parent & Tot
A leisure swim for parents/guardians/caregivers and preschool children up to five years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult and remain within arms’ reach for the duration of the swim.
Gender Diversity & Inclusivity Swim
A leisure swim in which all persons, identities and bodies are welcome & celebrated.
Adaptive Swim
A leisure swim in a low sensory environment for any person with a physical, emotional, behavioural or learning disability or impairment. Private swimming lessons are, also, available for adaptive swimmers.
For Women
A leisure swim inclusive to women for religious purposes open to female swimmers and their young children.
Active Aging
A leisure swim dedicated to community members who are over 45 years old to maintain physical and social wellness.
Pool Party/Theme Night
A two-hour leisure swim with a different fun-filled theme each week. Participants must pass the required swim-test to partake in some events.
Registration for OPEN SWIMS is not required.
Lane Swims
A self-directed swim workout in which swimmers must swim in circles, staying to the right of the lane. The pool is divided into six lanes with lanes designated to swimmers based on swim pace – slow, medium & fast.
Registration for LANE SWIMS is not required.
Aqua-Fit Classes
Aqua-POWER!
A high energy aerobic workout for advanced Aqua-Fit participants to improve muscular conditioning and strength to energetic & motivating music. Pool party!
Aqua- Moves
A medium-paced full-body workout using the water's natural resistance.
Gentle Aqua-Fit
Formerly known as Aqua-Arthritis, Gentle Aqua-Fit offers gentle movement through water to improve balance, posture, flexibility and joint health. Originally designed to help manage arthritic & joint pain, it is not suitable for all those living with other conditions affecting the body, including heart, stroke and multiple sclerosis. Best for beginners.
Deep Water
A high intensity full-body interval workout in deep water for advanced participants. Belts provided.
Completion of a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire and recommendation from a health care provided may be required.
Private and Semi-Private Swimming Lessons
Child Lessons
Based on The Lifesaving Society's Swim for Life program that focuses on basic survival skills, including self-rescue techniques, and stroke development to promote confidence in an aquatic environment.
Adult Lessons (16 Years Old +)
Individualized swim programs for beginner to advanced, including safe entries & exits, surface support, stroke development, and aquatic fitness skills under the Swim for Life model.

Leadership Programs
CPR & First-Aid
Provides candidates with the knowledge and confidence to respond to injuries and medical emergencies at home, work & play. The Lifesaving Society offers many levels of first aid training including, Foundational Workplace First Aid (Basic), Basic Workplace First Aid (Emergency), and Intermediate Workplace First Aid (Standard). Certifications, also, include CPR, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), Airway Management and/or Anaphylaxis Rescuer training.
CANADIAN SWIM PATROL
The Canadian Swim Patrol Program introduces swimmers to lifeguarding practices, including first aid and rescue skills, while continuing to develop swim strokes in preparation for The Bronze Club. The program is divided into the following three levels:
- Rookie Patrol: Focus is on stroke development & endurance, basic lifesaving skills, and first aid.
- Ranger Patrol: Swimmers develop each stroke over short distances. Lifesaving skills include a times medley, object support, and a rescue with a buoyant aid. First-aid skills include assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in SHOCK, and obstructed airways.
- Star Patrol: Swimmers are challenged with long-distance swim workouts; timed swims & object carries. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First-aid focuses on treatments of bone & joint injuries and respiratory emergencies. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim removals, and rolling over/support of a victim in shallow water.
THE BRONZE CLUB
A three-stage progressive lifesaving training program designed for swimmers aged eight to 15 who wish to pursue lifeguard certifications in Canada.
- Bronze Star: Develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skills, and personal fitness. Participants refine stroke mechanics and acquire self-rescue skills while applying fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star serves as an introduction to the Junior Lifeguard Club and a preparation for success for Bronze Medallion.
- Bronze Medallion: The program challenges candidate judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness, both physically and mentally. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills required to make decisions in an aquatic environment. Pre-requisite for Bronze Medallion is 13 years old OR Bronze Star. The Bronze Medallion is a pre-requisite for the assistance lifeguard training - Bronze Cross.
- Bronze Cross: The transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding as candidates prepare for the responsibilities of assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand lifesaving skills to apply those principles and techniques in active aquatic surveillance. The course emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. It is a prerequisite for the advanced lifeguard and leadership certifications, including National Lifeguard.
National Lifeguard (NL)
A legal certificate in Canada for lifeguarding public swimming pools. The program includes an Intermediate Workplace First Aid (Standard First Aid) certification. Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age and hold a Bronze Cross certification. The Lifesaving Society deems certifications current for 24 months and must be then re-certified to remain current.
Swim for Life Instructor
Nationally recognized course, for ages 15 and over, that provides the necessary skills to instruct aquatic programs.
Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
Certification allows instructors, over 16 years old, to teach advanced lifesaving courses, including The Bronze Club program and first aid courses.
Swim Clubs
Masters Swim Club
A fitness and competitive swim club for swimmers over the age of 18 of any swim level. Focus is on building confidence and power in swim strokes & skills in an aquatic community.
StFX Swim Club & Swimming Lessons
A fitness and competitive swim club for current StFX students off any swim level. The focus is on building overall water confidence with the goal of developing power & strength in the swim strokes.
Swim-Fit
Combine the power of swimming with the strength of resistance training in this aquatic-based group fitness program. A HIIT combo workout for strength training and cardio in which participants must swim a variety of distances and then exit the pool to complete resistance training on the pool deck, such as squats & push-ups. All workouts are scalable to suit participants’ skill level.
Junior Lifeguard Club
A water-based program that focuses on skill development and lifesaving knowledge; leadership and teamwork; personal fitness and education. Participants receive recognition seals to track individual progress for Community Education, Leadership/Teamwork, Lifesaving Knowledge, Lifesaving Skills, Swimming Skills, Fitness and Competition. All practices include mandatory poolside activation activities.
Prerequisites: Over the age of eight. Completed Swimmer 8, or higher, OR have basic swimming of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke; comfortable in deep water; diving into a pool; and has the ability to follow coaches’ directions.

An AQUATIC MEMBERSHIP allows access to all open swims, lane swims and aquatic fitness classes (AquaFit & SwimFit). Members receive a 20% discount on rentals & programming.
Infants and toddlers (under two years old) have FREE access to open swims.
Prices do not include HST.
