Powerful conversation, along with Black excellence, will be on the agenda Monday, Feb. 27th 2023 when StFX hosts for the first time an online evening event bringing together six inspiring Black StFX alumni.
In celebration of Black History Month, StFX will host this virtual conversation focused on the successful careers of six Black alumni and their lived experiences as students at StFX. It will be an opportunity to hear the impact StFX had on the lives and what they have learned and experienced since StFX. The event starts at 8 p.m. AST. To register, please see HERE
The conversation will be co-hosted by two StFX alumni who are becoming household names, Kwame Osei '10 and Henoc Muamba '11. Mr. Osei, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Nikki Ray Media in Toronto, is an author, keynote speaker, former CFL athlete, and a top three finalist on CTV’s Amazing Race Canada, Season 6. Mr. Muamba is a pro athlete, playing in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts. He was recently named the MVP and the Most Valuable Canadian at the 2022 Grey Cup.
The two were inspired to organize the panel after co-founding the StFX LIFT bursary with four other close friends. The $3,000 bursary is presented annually to a Black student leader at StFX. Their belief in establishing the bursary is that “We rise by lifting others” and hope other alumni will join them in supporting this bursary.
The panel includes four alumni from across the decades:
• Gil Green ’80 was StFX's first Black basketball player and is a Sports Hall of Fame inductee (2006).
• Dr. Tito Daodu ’08 is Canada's first Black pediatric surgeon.
• Dr. Dan Lumsden ’00 is an educator who has written about the experiences of Black students in the educational system.
• Tara Reddick ’21 is StFX's Black Student Advisor, the first recipient of the LIFT bursary, and a pre-service teacher candidate.
“I’m excited to listen and learn from the lived experiences of successful Black Xaverians,” says host Kwame Osei. “This event will be historic. It’s a long overdue conversation. It’s important to explore the multi-dimensional sides of people’s experiences. Henoc and I are grateful to be involved. I hope many StFX students, faculty, staff, and alumni will tune in as we celebrate Black excellence and inspire the leaders of tomorrow.”
This evening is a partnership between StFX Advancement, the StFX Black Student Advising Office, StFX Office of the Associate Vice President, Research, & Graduate Studies, and the StFX LIFT Bursary for Black student leaders.
