Biography

Jessica Mensch received a BFA in Painting from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA in Visual Arts from Hunter College, New York, NY. Her work currently focusses on expressions of the uncanny as found in magic shows, theater, and video—with their comingling of the imaginary and real, and blends traditional art practices such as painting, stage design, and architecture with the technological apparatus of video and special effects. Mensch also works collaboratively. She currently co-creates with Emily Pelstring and Katherine Kline a multi-episode, live, internet broadcast, Sistership TV, with the generous support of The Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Mensch has undertaken significant solo projects with the support of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and residency programs such as the Banff Artist Residency. She has exhibited in numerous galleries, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Confederation Center Art Gallery in PEI, and the St. FX Art Gallery. Among other awards she has received, Mensch was a finalist for the Canadian RBC Painting Prize in 2013. In addition, Mensch is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Union in New York City, where she continues to work as a Scenic Artist for film and television productions.
