Colleen Maykut
Dr. Maykut, DNP, RN is an Associate Professor in the Rankin School of Nursing at St. Francis Xavier University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Nursing (Adult Cardiology Nurse Practitioner; both from the University of Alberta), and a DNP (Doctorate in Nursing Practice) in Educational Leadership (Case Western Reserve University – Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing).
Dr. Maykut, is an aspiring ally committed to disrupting hegemonic practices which have historically shaped nursing education. As an advocate and knowledge disrupter, she ensures diverse perspectives are introduced to nursing students to inspire metacognition and foster phronesis in their future practice. She designs relevant learning experiences which are inclusive, engaging, innovative, collaborative, and inspiring; creating heutagogical opportunities for all learners to reach their full potential. She is cognizant of the importance of challenging ideals of privilege, which influences who has power and voice and thus engages in liberation to address structural determinants of health; notably by incorporating the Truth and Reconciliation Recommendations for Health and Education.
She is involved in international nursing service (1) as an elected committee member for Sigma Theta Tau – International Honour Society of Nursing, (2) as an editorial advisory/board member and peer-reviewer for over 10 journals, and (3) invited leadership roles on nursing advisory boards.
