Janette Fecteau
Janette Fecteau studied batik and stained glass at StFX with Iris Delgado-Roach, and is also a graduate of UBC’s Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (Poetry). She has a lifelong interest in many forms of textile art, working in the medium of batik since 1985. She enjoys working with natural fibres such as wool, cotton, linen, and silk, seeking an interplay between soft tactile textures and the often “hard” edges of subjects such as tools, roads, and infrastructure. Travels to Iceland, Nepal, India, Europe and Guatemala have led her to investigate many fibre art traditions, including knitting, weaving, and batik. Janette has worked in stained glass since 2000. In many ways, stained glass studio practice is the opposite of batik practice: very controlled and involving a lot of patience. Janette enjoys the different technical challenges of both media, and working with students to find their own ways through these challenges. For Janette, seeing students realize their own ideas, subject matter, and aesthetics is one of the great joys of teaching.
