The Frank McKenna Centre for Leadership supports St. Francis Xavier University’s longstanding commitment to social justice and social change by providing our students with resources and training for a form of leadership that is aimed at creating positive change. Each year the McKenna Centre offers an intensive residency to a noted scholar whose work models innovative scholarship that is aimed at social change and that is committed to social justice. 

Scholars in Residence will receive office space at the McKenna Centre and stay at StFX for an intensive one-week residency. During this week, students, faculty, and community members will be able to engage in detail with the work of the SiR through a variety of events and activities. SiR are also expected to be available to students through daily office hours. Residencies are awarded by application and by invitation.

Details of the position
  • One-week intensive residency 
  • Honorarium: $5,000  
  • The McKenna Centre covers all travel costs and will arrange for lodging (SiR are welcome to bring family and partners; for scholars arriving with families or partners, we will arrange for suitable housing and, if requested, for child care) 
  • The particulars of the residency will be developed in collaboration with each SiR. Possible activities include: 1-2 public talks; workshops with students; reading groups and colloquia; screenings with discussion; performances and readings; etc.

  • Cover letter and proposal (2-3 pages) outlining the aims, activities, and topic of a one-week intensive residency (applicants are asked to speak to the relation between their past and current research projects and StFX’s/the McKenna Centre's commitment to social justice and social change, including research in leadership in specific areas including but not limited to: climate and environment; Indigenous Studies; Health and its social determinants; governance and policy; culture, society, and politics; race, racism, and comparative race studies; poverty and economic inequality; colonialism and decolonization; labour relations; corporate social entrepreneurship; etc. 
  • Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with ongoing research at StFX and to identify in the proposal specific ways in which their research and residency may contribute to, enrich, or lend new perspectives to ongoing discussions and scholarship at StFX.
