Climate and Environment students have many opportunities beyond classroom learning. These enrich your university experience and help set you apart in the job market after you graduate. Check out the options below:  

International Exchange

There are many benefits to participating in International Exchange. It’s a chance to be immersed in a different culture and language, make friends, and develop independence and problem-solving skills. When you’re carving a career path after graduating from StFX, your international experience will show that you like a challenge and can adapt successfully to new social and cultural environments.

Service Learning 

StFX has a long tradition of engaging in Service Learning. Since 1996, students have enjoyed experiential and hands-on opportunities to enrich their classroom education. Students provide services in communities (both locally and internationally) and participate in reflection that relates what they learn in the classroom to how they experience their service opportunity. In the past, students who participated in immersion service learning have gone to places such as Toronto, Belize, Peru, and Guatemala.

Co-operative Education

Co-op is an educational program in which you alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of full-time paid employment in positions related to your academic and/or career interests. As with the BASc in Climate and Environment program, BASc co-op students will be able to explore Climate and Environment from diverse work experiences.  

The Co-op Process: 

1. Meet with your Co-op Coordinator who reviews the program requirements, helps you to develop your academic co-op plan, and identifies various positions/organizations that best match your skills and career interests.  
2. Complete a series of professional development courses. Through dynamic and engaged teaching, Co-op staff present materials to help co-op students achieve success in the program and in work experiences. 
3.  Complete a minimum of 12-16 months of work experience. Your work term sequencing options:  

• 4 months plus 8 months
• 8 months plus 4 months
• 12 months consecutive with a single employer

While on work term, the Co-op staff engages with students and their supervisors to promote a purposeful learning work experience. Through reflective assignments, students gain more meaning about who they are as a student and as a professional. Finally, co-op students complete the COOP 405 (3 credit) course that runs in September. Students complete a formal debrief with their co-op peers, group presentations, and paper.
