Employment

The fields of Climate and Environment offer students a wide variety of satisfying careers. In almost all North American and European countries, demand for environment and climate practitioners is on the rise. In 2013, ECO Canada published a detailed profile on Canadian Environmental Employment in which the authors noted:

“Over 730,000 environmental professionals in Canada spend at least 50% of their work time performing environmental activities, representing just over 4% of the total Canadian labour force.”

Drivers of growth include tightening regulations, high energy costs, the increasing frequency of natural disasters, ecosystem changes and impacts, and the need for new technical solutions. Our graduates may go on to work in sustainability, natural resources management, site reclamation and cleanup, policy development, communications, education, energy, environmental economics, clean tech, water quality, waste management, government, research, or other fields. According to ECO Canada, students can expect a career that takes them in multiple directions:

“Most employers (82.4%) report that their environmental employees perform tasks in multiple sub-sectors, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of environmental work.” Learn More
