Biography

Dr. Harenberg grew up in a small town close to the Harz Mountains in Germany. From a young age, he developed a passion for physical activity and various sports. He completed a combined Bachelor and Master of Education (1. Staatsexamen) in English and Physical Education at the University of Göttingen, Germany in 2009. Dr. Harenberg continued his education with a doctoral degree in Kinesiology and Health studies with an emphasis on sport psychology at the University of Regina. He completed his degree in 2014. Next, Dr. Harenberg worked 2 years as a research scientist at the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region until he joined Ithaca College in New York as an Assistant Professor for Research Methods and Statistics in 2016. In 2020, he joined StFX as an Assistant Professor in Sport Psychology. He also provides Mental Performance Consulting services to athletes and community members. Outside of academia, Dr. Harenberg loves to hike with his wife Katelyn and his two sons, Leon and Benjamin. He is an avid runner, cyclist, golfer, and loves to coach soccer.

Research

Dr. Harenberg’s main research interests lie in two areas: 1. Group Dynamics – his research examines processes that affect team hierarchies (competition within teams, selection, deselection), and 2. Perceptual Cognitive Training – using technology, Dr. Harenberg examines different technologies to sharpen the cognitive skills of athletes and various other populations. Presently, he teaches the introductory class to sport and exercise psychology (HK136) as well as a special topics class (HK271) on group dynamics.
