Biography

Dr. Kennedy has a B.A. in English from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto (1984), and received his MA (1992) and PhD (1997) in Moral Theology from the University of Notre Dame. His work at Notre Dame was supported by a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His major field of research is the ethics of St. Augustine. Professor Kennedy has recently published a co-edited collection of papers, A Reader's Companion to Augustine's Confessions (Westminster John Knox Press, 2003), to which he contributed the chapter on Book Eleven, which contains Augustine's famous discussion of time, and an invited paper, "Truthfulness as the Bond of Society" in the collection Augustine and Politics (Lexington Press, 2003). His current projects include a co-edited collection on Augustine and literature, an introduction to Augustine's life and thought, and research into Augustine's theory of the will. He has also contributed to the HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism (1995), Augustine through the Ages: An Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, 1999), and The New Catholic Encyclopedia (The Catholic University of America Press, 2002), and published book reviews in Augustinian Studies and Maritain Studies. In addition to his research on Augustine, he has presented papers on various topics in health care ethics. In 2003, Prof. Kennedy became co-chair, for a three-year term, of the Augustine and Augustinianisms Consultation in the American Academy of Religion.
