Biography

"It seems that there is an honesty and sincerity in limiting my subject matter to my immediate surroundings. Painting thus becomes a simple marriage of the circumstance of place and the artist’s materials.
My opinion as a painter is that great art is produced by a balanced consideration of materials and subject; something painted well is not simply an accurate pictorial description of a specific thing, but a means to convey insights and observations given through the handling of the medium.
As a representational painter, I feel a kind of satisfaction with the appearance of nature, but the work must also be a manifestation of the medium, something that could not function in any other discipline."

Andy MacLean received his BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2000 with a Major in studio/painting and a Minor in art history. He has exhibited in both Canada and the U.S. and belongs to collections in Toronto, Halifax, Chicago, Ft. Myers, Stockholm, and Edessa, Greece. He has been a recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Toronto Arts Council and Nova Scotia Arts Council.
